ST. SIMON'S ISLAND, Ga. - The Ole Miss men's golf team held steady in the final round of action on Sunday, finishing eighth in the overall standings at the Southeastern Conference Championships with a score of 304-290-296-890.
Florida captured the overall title by firing a 9-under-par final round, bringing home the trophy with a three-day score of 292-293-271-856. The Gators' Brett Stegmaier claimed the individual title with a score of 67-72-64-203.
"We didn't finish as high as we would have liked, but all-in-all it wasn't a bad tournament," said head coach Woody Cowart. "We have a lot of guys who gained valuable experience here and return all five of these players next season. We finished ahead of some good teams like Vanderbilt and that can only help us in our quest to get back to the NCAA Regionals."
Jordan Dempsey ended the tournament as the highest finisher on the Rebel squad. The junior from Jacksonville, Fla., finished tied for 19th overall thanks in large part to a strong second round that helped push the Rebels to the eighth-place finish. Dempsey carded a 76-68-74-218.
Lucas Boyd, a junior from Garland, Texas, carded the second best finish of the weekend for the Rebels thanks to a strong second round as well. Boyd fired an even par 70 in the second round to help Dempsey push the team to the eighth place finish. He tied for 29th with a score of 77-70-76-223.
Pope Spruiell recovered from his second round performance and fired a 72 in the final round of action to finish the event tied for 36th with a score of 75-78-72--225, while teammate Jarrod Gardner finished right behind him tied for 39th. Gardner fired a score of 76-74-77-227.
