Four Rebels Named To 2003 SEC Academic Honor Roll

OXFORD, Miss. - Four members of the Ole Miss men's golf team were recognized by the Southeastern Conference on Wednesday for their efforts in the classroom, when they were named to the SEC Academic Honor Roll by the league office.
Tommy Clement, Bryan Kane, Josh Kelley and David Shields all received the honor for the Rebels.
"It's a wonderful thing when these gentlemen can be recognized for their efforts in the classroom," said head coach Woody Cowart. "There is so much more to be a student athlete these days, and making the grade in the classroom is as important as getting it done on the course. I'm proud of what these four individuals have done to help lead this program in both arenas."
Kane, a red shirt sophomore from Raleigh, N.C., earned the award for the first time. He is majoring in accountancy. Kane competed in three tournaments for the Rebels this season with his best finish coming at the Mason Rudolph Championships where he tied for 20th with a score of 74-75-70-219.
David Shields, a sophomore from Jacksonville, Fla., also received the honor for the first time in his career. Shields, a banking and finance major, was also selected as a Verizon Student Athlete of the Week in the fall. The sophomore competed in the first tournament of the season for Ole Miss, scoring an 82-78-81-241 at the Kiawah Island Intercollegiate.
Also receiving the honor for their efforts in the 2001-02 academic year were Tommy Clement and Josh Kelley.
Clement is making his fifth appearance on the honor roll, and was named a Golf Coaches Association Academic All-America last season. Kelley is being honored for the third time.
To be eligible for selection to the 2003 SEC Academic Honor Roll, a student-athlete must have a 3.0 grade point average for either the past year of for their career, be a sophomore or higher in academic classification, and have 24 hours countable toward a degree. The 2003 SEC Women's Basketball Honor Roll is based on grades from the 2001-02 academic calendar.
