KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - Tennessee sent 12 batters to the plate during a six-run fifth inning and then cruised to a 7-2 win over Ole Miss in the opener of a three-game Southeastern Conference series Friday night, in front of 1,427 at Lindsey Nelson Stadium.
The Volunteers (18-11, 5-5 SEC) scored the six runs on just two hits in the decisive fifth inning, as Tennessee took advantage of five walks, a hit batsmen and a two-out error. With runners on first and second and two outs, Ole Miss starter Mark Holliman issued three straight walks to force home Jordan Czarniecki and Walter Sevilla to give the Volunteers a 2-1 lead.
Holliman was then relieved by Nick Bradshaw and Josh Alley greeted him with a two-run single to score Jimbo Watson and Michael Rivera to make it 4-1. The Rebels looked like they would get off the inning down the three runs when Bradshaw coaxed Nick Crowe to hit bounce to second, however, Matt Tolbert's errant throw to first allowed two runs to score and make it 6-1.
Junior left-hander Ben Riley (3-2) settled down after struggling in the early innings to work 7 2/3 innings to earn the win. He allowed two runs on seven hits and five walks and struck out two. Riley allowed six hits through the first four innings but didn't allow another until Stephen Head's one-out single in the eighth.
Holliman (3-2) was charged with the loss. He held the Volunteers to just three hits but was plagued by eight walks as he was charged with five runs, four earned, in 4 2/3 innings.
Kyle Norrid went 2-for-2 with two RBIs to lead Tennessee as the Volunteers out-hit the Rebels 8-7.
Stephen Head and Matt Tolbert had two hits each for Ole Miss (18-11, 5-5 SEC). Chad Sterbens went 1-for-4 to extend his hitting streak to a season-high 13 games.
Both teams stranded 11 runners on base as they combined to go 3-for-25 with runners in scoring position. Ole Miss was 0-for-10 with runners in scoring position.
The series will continue Saturday evening at 6 p.m., (CST) and will be televised by Comcast Sports Southeast/Charter Sports Southeast. Senior right-hander T.J. Beam (3-1, 2.35 ERA) is scheduled to start for Ole Miss against Tennessee junior left-hander Derek Tharpe (3-2, 3.45 ERA).
