TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - Despite totaling more hits on the day, Ole Miss dropped both games of a softball doubleheader at No. 18 Alabama Saturday, each by a 5-1 count.
The Rebels (14-23, 3-11 SEC) look to snap a five-game skid and salvage the series finale with the Crimson Tide (31-13, 14-3 SEC) Sunday at 1:30 p.m. CST at Alabama Softball Complex.
Staci Ramsey single-handedly won the early game for the Tide. The freshman third baseman belted two home runs - a solo shot in the fourth inning and a grand slam in the fifth - and drove in all five UA runs.
Ramsey's round-rippers were two of only five hits surrendered by Rebel hurler Lindsay Price (8-10), who went the distance in the losing effort. Stephanie VanBrakle (9-4) also surrendered five hits but only one run for the complete-game victory.
Ole Miss avoided the shutout with a seventh-inning score. Desiree Layman and Andrea Brahs singled and Rebecca McIntire reached on catcher's interference to load the bases with no outs. Jordan Chitwood put the Rebels on the scoreboard with an RBI-groundout, but the rally would end there.
Brahs and McIntire each collected a double and two hits. McIntire's two-bagger marked her first collegiate extra-base hit. The freshman third baseman had tallied 26 basenocks - all singles - prior to Saturday's game one.
In the late game, Ole Miss, for the third time in its last four games, took an early lead only to have it slip away. The Rebels had four hits through the first three innings, including a solo homer by Brooke Turner (3) in the third that put Ole Miss ahead 1-0.
Alabama countered with a four-run fourth inning that pushed the Tide on top for good. Jackie McClain tripled in a score and reached home on a UM throwing error. Two walks and a hit-batter then loaded the bases for Emily Currie, who singled in two more.
The Rebels threatened in the sixth, using two singles and a walk to load the bases with one out and chase away UA starter Jennifer Wright (8-4). However, reliever Erin Wright would strike out the side and hold Ole Miss hitless through the final 1.2 frames for the save.
McClain padded the lead with a seventh-inning long ball for her second RBI of the game.
Rebel righthander Dana Brill (1-8) surrendered five hits in the complete-game loss. The freshman also notched her first career basehit.
Ole Miss outhit Alabama 6-5 in game two, and 11-10 for the day. Layman, a junior shortstop, batted 2-for-3 and finished the twin bill with three hits to extend her season-best hit streak to seven games. McIntire also totaled three hits combined on the day.
