BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Ole Miss freshman first baseman/left-handed pitcher Stephen Head was named the Southeastern Conference's Player of the Week for the week of March 31-April 6, the conference office announced Monday.
Head helped the Rebels to a 3-1 mark last week that included a 5-1 win over No. 5 Mississippi State in last Wednesday's Mayor's Trophy game, both at the plate and as a pitcher.
"This is a tremendous honor for Stephen," said Ole Miss head coach Mike Bianco. "He's done a tremendous job for us both in the field and on the mound, especially as a true freshman. He certainly played a huge role in our success last week, and he has been a major factor for us this season."
In four games last week, Head batted .438 (7-for-16) with one home run and seven runs batted in. In this past weekend's series at Tennessee, he was 6-for-13 to help Ole Miss to its first series win over the Volunteers since 1991. He belted a two-run home run in the 6-3 victory on Saturday, and had four RBIs in Sunday's 9-8 series-clinching win, including a two-run double to spark a five-run seventh.
Head also made three relief appearances on the mound and recorded saves in all three wins last week.
The Rebels are currently 20-11 on the season, 7-5 in the SEC. Ole Miss will play at Southern Miss Wednesday night at 6:30 p.m., before opening a three-game SEC series at LSU Friday evening at 7 p.m.
