Rebels Manhandled by Bulldogs in Series Opener

OXFORD, Miss. - Mississippi State posted a 10-run fifth inning in handing Ole Miss a 14-0 beating Wednesday in the opener of their three-game softball series.
The in-state rivals finish up the set with a doubleheader Thursday at 5 p.m. CST at Ole Miss Softball Complex.
With a 4-0 advantage entering the fifth, the Bulldogs (29-16, 9-9 SEC) exploded for 10 runs - nine with two outs - using three Rebel fielding errors and seven hits, including back-to-back home runs by Iyhia McMichael and Lindsay Nelson. McMichael tallied two hits and four RBI in the inning, which secured MSU the five-inning mercy rule.
Jennifer Jessup also drove in four runs in the game with an RBI-single in the second inning and a three-run double in the fifth. Jennifer Nelson batted 3-for-4 to lead the State 15-hit attack.
Bulldog hurler Melissa Massey turned in her sixth shutout of the season with two hits surrendered - a leadoff single to Britte Hardy in the first inning and a double by Phyllis Manley in the fifth.
Lindsay Price (8-11) tossed all five innings on the Rebel mound, though only the first five runs allowed were earned.
Wednesday's defeat marked the first time Ole Miss (14-25, 3-13, SEC) has lost by mercy rule this season.
