Waite Tabbed By Philadelphia Wednesday

NEW YORK - Ole Miss senior catcher Charlie Waite was selected in the 23rd round by the Philadelphia Phillies during the second day of the 2003 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft on Wednesday. On Tuesday, senior right-hander T.J. Beam was picked in the 10th round by the New York Yankees and junior infielder Matt Tolbert was tabbed in the 19th round by the Baltimore Orioles.
Waite, 6-feet-1, 182 pounds for Newport Harbor, Calif., was a four-year letterwinner at Ole Miss. He was the Rebels' starting catcher for the past two seasons.
For his career, Waite posted a .278 batting average with five home runs and 62 runs batted in. Defensively, he caught 31.5 percent of runners attempting to steal (53-of-168).
This past season was his most productive at the plate. Playing in 61-of-62 games, Waite hit .304 with four HRs and 28 RBIs. He also threw out 29.6 (21-of-71) percent of attempted base stealers, and ended the regular season leading the SEC in runners caught stealing.
Ole Miss finished its third season under head coach Mike Bianco with a 35-27 record and a berth in the NCAA Houston Regionals.
