INDIANAPOLIS - Alex Hartman, who recently completed an illustrious career with the Ole Miss men's tennis team, was among 19 Division I male student-athletes who participated in spring sports to receive an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship. Hartman has been awarded a $6,900 scholarship to be applied to postgraduate study at the university or professional school of his choice.

The NCAA postgraduate scholarships were awarded for all three NCAA divisions who participated in spring sports, which included baseball, men's and women's golf, men's and women's lacrosse, rowing, softball, men's and women's tennis, men's volleyball, outdoor track and field and women's water polo. Hartman is the only male student-athlete in spring sports from the Southeastern Conference to earn an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship. In addition, he is the first Ole Miss student-athlete recipient since Rhodes Scholar Calvin Thigpen (track and field) won the prestigious award in 1999.

"This award is perhaps the highest honor a student-athlete can earn," head coach Billy Chadwick said. "It represents the best college athletics has to offer, recognizing the individual that excels in the classroom as well as in the field of competition. We are very proud of Alex and his outstanding accomplishments while representing our program and the University of Mississippi."

A two-time All-American, Hartman became the first Rebel to earn All-SEC honors in each of his four years and just the second Rebel to record 100 wins in a career. He ended his final campaign in 2003 as the nation's No. 7 ranked player, while helping lead the Rebels to their second consecutive SEC Western Division Championship and the NCAA Elite Eight. The Rebels finished the season ranked No. 8 in the nation, marking the ninth time in the last 10 years for the team to be ranked top 10.

Off the court, Hartman was a regular on the University Honor Roll and a three-time member of the SEC Academic Honor Roll. He was nominated as the University of Mississippi's candidate for the 2003 Boyd McWhorter SEC Scholar-Athlete of the Year, and as a finalist, received a $5,000 postgraduate scholarship. He was selected to the 2003 CoSIDA/Verizon District VI Academic All-America Team and named an ITA Scholar-Athlete in 2002.

"Alex is a unique individual who can balance the rigors of competing as a top 10 national tennis player while maintaining an exemplary academic record," Athletics Director Pete Boone said. "His ability to handle both is a credit to his hard work and determination to succeed at everything he does."

To qualify for an NCAA postgraduate scholarship, a studentathlete must have an overall gradepoint average of 3.200 (on a 4.000 scale) or its equivalent and must have performed with distinction as a member of the varsity team in the sport in which the studentathlete was nominated. The studentathlete must have behaved, both on and off the field, in a manner that has brought credit to the studentathlete, the institution and intercollegiate athletics. The studentathlete also must intend to continue academic work beyond the baccalaureate degree as a fulltime or parttime graduate student.

Hartman graduated in May of this year with a degree in Managerial Finance and is presently playing on the ATP professional circuit.
