Manning Named First-Team Preseason All-SEC

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - In a vote of the media, Ole Miss senior quarterback Eli Manning was selected to the All-Southeastern Conference pre-season first team following the 2003 SEC Football Media Days, which concluded here Thursday at the Wynfrey Hotel.

Manning, who received 59 of 78 votes cast, enters his final campaign at Ole Miss as the holder of 24 school records, including 6,519 yards passing and 52 touchdowns. Collins is the school's all-time leading receiver in TD receptions with 17 and Mitchell will enter his final season with 144 career tackles, including 8.5 QB sacks for a minus 44 yards.

Auburn was predicted to win the SEC football championship in 2003. The Tigers were on 45 of 78 ballots as the SEC Champions followed by Georgia on 12 ballots, Tennessee on 10, LSU 6, Ole Miss and Florida 2 each and Arkansas one. The Tigers are predicted to defeat Georgia in the SEC Championship Game.

In the Eastern Division, Georgia was predicted to win on 42 of 78 ballots, followed by Tennessee, which was placed first on 30 ballots and Florida, which was on six ballots. South Carolina, Kentucky and Vanderbilt rounded out the division.

Auburn was predicted to win the West on 60 of 78 ballots. LSU was second, on 13 ballots, Arkansas third, Alabama fourth, Ole Miss fifth and Mississippi State sixth.

Each SEC team was represented on the first or second teams. Alabama had more first-team players with 5 (Georgia 4, LSU 4, Auburn 3) and Georgia had the most overall players with 7 (LSU 6, Alabama 6, Tennessee 6). Nine of the 12 SEC teams are represented on the first team, and 15 of the 25 players making the first team are from the Western Division.
