OXFORD, Miss. - The Ole Miss football team opened up its second week of preseason Monday with a day of analysis. During a controlled situational scrimmage in the morning practice, head coach David Cutcliffe gained a better understanding of where his team sits in preparation for the upcoming season.
"I thought we got out of today's work what we needed to," Cutcliffe said. "It gives us a picture of where we are and what we need to work on. I am sure when we look at today's tape we will see things that we must correct on both sides of the ball. I thought we missed too many tackles on defense, but on a positive note, the offense ran the ball better."
The two-hour morning session was held on the AstroPlay surface of Vaught-Hemingway Stadium and also included numerous position drills. The team wore shoulder pads and shorts for the evening workout.
Tuesday's slate features an afternoon practice in full pads, while the squad will participate in a scrimmage on Wednesday.
"Right now, we are in the mode of aiming everything towards Wednesday's scrimmage," said Cutcliffe. "We have two workouts left before that scrimmage. We will look at the tape, correct some things and go back to work."
Monday marked the return of senior captain Jesse Mitchell, who missed most of last week as a result of an ulcer on the cornea of his right eye. Cutcliffe also announced that sophomore defensive back Jeremy Ruffin has decided to leave the team.
Ole Miss will hold "Meet The Rebels" Day Saturday, Aug. 16 at 1:00 p.m. (CT) in The Grove. The Rebels open their 2003 campaign Aug. 30 at Vanderbilt. Jefferson Pilot Sports will televised the game, which kicks off at 11:30 a.m. (CT).
