OXFORD, Miss. - The day after a scrimmage in which the team worked on game situations, the Ole Miss Rebel football team came out in shorts and held a spirited workout Thursday afternoon in Vaught-Hemingway Stadium.
Despite an early afternoon shower before practice, temperatures climbed back up as the team worked on conditioning and position drills throughout the afternoon.
"We got really good work, though it turned out to be awfully hot," said head coach David Cutcliffe. "The team pushed through, even the conditioning part of drills. The attitude of the squad was good and it was one of the best tempos we've had in practice."
The bulk of the afternoon focused on getting deeper into preparation for the season opener at Vanderbilt, with the team working on its game plan. The Rebels worked to improve on areas of concern from the previous day's scrimmage, and will continue to focus on limiting turnovers and improving the details of the offense, defense and kicking game.
The offense and defense worked separately against the scout teams in one-on-one and seven-on-seven drills before coming together to work on the full package at the close of practice.
"Several players continue to play well and impress," Cutcliffe said. "No one has disappointed us at running back, but no one has stepped up and separated himself from the pack. We'll continue to run through things and evaluate players and positions in preparations for our season opener."
The Rebels will continue to practice over the weekend and throughout the next week before taking to the road to open the season against Southeastern Conference for Vanderbilt on Aug. 30.
