Ole Miss Drops Soccer Exhibition Match with Oklahoma

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. - Despite dominating shots and time of possession, the Ole Miss soccer team dropped a 2-1 decision to Oklahoma in an exhibition match Saturday at Burns Park Soccer Complex in the neutral site of Little Rock.

The scrimmage served as a preseason tuneup for the Rebels, who open the 2003 campaign Friday against South Alabama. Ole Miss head coach Steve Holeman, who has been with the program since its birth in 1994, played every healthy Rebel on the roster and evaluated his team's status as the new season approaches.

"We became a better team today," Holeman said. "We were able to see all our players in action and get an idea of where we are through the preseason.

"We did an outstanding job of maintaining the ball, but Oklahoma was talented enough to capitalize on our mistakes. We still have things to work on, but hopefully we'll have that taken care of by Friday."

Enduring temperatures in the mid-90s, the Rebels finished the afternoon with a 15-5 edge on shots and a 7-1 advantage on corner kicks. They sustained possession for virtually the entire first half but trailed 1-0 at the break after Sooner Logan Womack got in behind the defense for a 12-yard score at the 22-minute mark. Another Rebel defensive lapse in the 62nd minute allowed Kristin Vesely to increase the OU advantage to 2-0 on just five shots.

The Ole Miss attack broke free with six minutes left, when Amy Sample set up Karen Hall 18 yards in front, and the junior forward stopped, rotated and blasted a shot from the right side to the left corner of the net.

Ole Miss, which is bidding for a second straight NCAA Tournament berth, begins the upcoming season with a six-game homestand. The season-opener against the Jaguars is set for 7 p.m. CST at Ole Miss Soccer Stadium.
