OXFORD, Miss. - Ole Miss began the 2003 soccer campaign Friday with a late offensive explosion, pounding South Alabama for five second-half goals en route to a 6-0 victory in the season-opener for both teams.

All-SEC senior Amy Sample netted the first Ole Miss goal of the new year in the 40th minute, connecting from 20 yards by beating the Jaguar goalkeeper to the near-post. It provided the Rebels a narrow 1-0 lead at halftime.

Holding an 8-3 edge on shots, Ole Miss ignited an aggressive offensive attack right out of the second-half gates. At the 57:25, a pair of freshmen teamed up as Brittney Potts sent the ball to Ashley Ferree, who one-touched a 15-yard blast to the upper part of the net.

Seven minutes later, senior Courtney Biddle, who missed last season with injury, recorded her 11th career goal, tapping in a Kelly Renie header from five yards out.

Renie continued the Rebel onslaught with two goals of her own. The 2002 SEC Freshman of the Year booted home a Potts cross at 70:49, and less than three minutes later, Renie struck again from 10 yards away after Erin Edmundson pushed the ball ahead of the defense.

Sophomore Ashley Hanne finished the night's scoring with her first career goal in the 89th minute, with freshman Sammi Gould notching the assist.

Ole Miss compiled an 18-2 shot advantage in the second half, and 26-5 for the match.

"We made some changes in the system midway through the game," said Rebel head coach Steve Holeman. "Our big second half was a credit to our players' fitness, which helped us outlast them.

"It was the first game of the year, and everyone was excited and ready to start the season. You have to expect some jitters no matter who the team. Luckily, the butterflies didn't affect us."

The six goals was the Rebels' most in a game since an 11-0 whipping of Alabama A&M in 2001.

Kicking off the season with a six-game homestand, Ole Miss continues its first weekend of play Sunday against Memphis. Game time between the regional rivals is set for 1 p.m. CT at Ole Miss Soccer Stadium.
