OXFORD, Miss. - Ole Miss turned in its second blowout of the soccer season's first weekend Sunday, routing Memphis, 7-0, but not without suffering a major loss to injury.
At the 28:18 mark, All-SEC first team forward Kelly Renie went down with a torn anterior cruciate ligament and is expected to miss the remainder of the season. Renie, the 2002 SEC Freshman of the Year, was among the nation's leaders in goals last year with 18, and notched her sixth career multiple-goal performance in Friday's 6-0 season-opening victory over South Alabama.
The sophomore from Carmel, Ind., missed her true freshman season in 2001 with the same injury, and it marks the eighth time over the last three years that the Rebels have lost a player to a ruptured ACL.
"It was heart-breaking news," said Ole Miss head coach Steve Holeman. "This is another challenge for our team. Everyone needs to take their game to the next level, and try to turn this into as much a positive as we can. We will miss Kelly's speed and ability to score goals, but we have depth there."
The Ole Miss depth was evident Sunday, as six different players notched goals against the Tigers (0-2), led by redshirt-freshman Brittney Potts' first career two-goal outing. Potts, who was absent in 2002 with an ACL tear, set up freshman Ashlee Feree for an empty-net goal at the end of the first half, and then provided the first two scores after the break, connecting from five yards out at 46:12 and from 10 yards away at 67:41.
All-SEC midfielder Kristal Menard assisted on Potts' second goal and finished the afternoon with two assists and a chip-shot goal in the 27th minute off a Lindley Beckman corner kick. Beckman also connected on the Rebel's first goal of the match with a one-touch, 20-yard blast at the 8:42 mark.
Junior Karen Hall and freshman Emily Brown each picked up her first goal of the new campaign. Erin Edmundson and Elise Karlowicz posted an assist apiece.
Ole Miss controlled the match start to finish, and closed out with a 29-9 shot advantage and a 7-0 edge on corner kicks.
"Our fitness showed today," Holeman said. "It was very hot, and we were able to outlast a good Memphis team that wore down in the second half."
With a 2-0 record on the young campaign, Ole Miss continues its season-opening, six-game homestand next weekend with a pair of matches. The Rebels host FIU Friday at 7 p.m. CT and Southwest Missouri State Sunday at 1 p.m. at Ole Miss Soccer Stadium.
