Ole Miss Notches Third Straight Soccer Shutout

9/5/2003 | Soccer

Sept. 5, 2003

Final Stats

OXFORD, Miss. - Ole Miss has yet to allow a goal through three games of the soccer season, as the Rebels shut out FIU Friday, 3-0, to improve their early season mark to 3-0-0 with three shutouts.

The Rebel defense limited the Golden Panthers (0-2-0) to nine shots, five on goal, and Ole Miss finished the match with a 16-9 edge on shots. The Rebels have a 71-23 advantage on the season and have outscored their first three opponents 16-0.

Ole Miss jumped ahead of FIU at the 26:24 mark off the head of All-SEC junior Kristal Menard, as she drove home a Hillary Beckman pass to the upper left corner of the net. Menard's second goal of the new season provided the Rebels a narrow 1-0 lead until the final 16 minutes when Ole Miss sealed the victory with two quick scores.

In the 74th minute, a pair of freshmen teamed up, as Emily Brown crossed the ball to Ashley Ferree who connected from three yards out on the right side. A native of Cordova, Tenn., Ferree has kicked off her college career with a three-game goal streak, and now tops the team in goals.

Less than four minutes later, senior Courtney Biddle netted her second goal of the year with a successful header off a Lindley Beckman corner kick. Biddle's 12th career goal secured the Rebels their second straight season with a 3-0 start.

"FIU brought a new challenge to us," said Rebel head coach Steve Holeman. "They are a quality team, well-coached and very organized, and our challenge tonight was to solve that. They are a very physical team, and I thought our girls responded to that. We made some adjustments at halftime because we felt we could do some things better. We did that with the two goals we put up. I think to shut this team out was a major success."

Senior goalkeeper Brittany Gillespie tallied four saves in notching her 14th career shutout. The Modesto, Calif., native is one shutout away from becoming the Ole Miss all-time leader.

Ole Miss continues the six-game, season-opening homestand Sunday against Southwest Missouri State. Game time is set for 1 p.m. CT at Ole Miss Soccer Stadium.
