Rebels Drop Tough Fight With Baylor 3-1

WACO, Texas - Ole Miss had been looking to dig deep and gut out a game the whole weekend at the Baylor Classic. The Rebels (0-3) dug down and stared down several gut checks against Baylor (3-1) on Saturday night, but it wasn't enough as a taller and more experienced Bears team claimed the win 3-1 (30-28, 22-30, 18-30, 24-30).
"We're disappointed with the outcome of the game tonight, but we're pleased we have made a lot of progress this weekend," said head coach Joe Getzin. "We fought hard against a good Baylor team and saw we can play with teams like this. It's a good measuring stick for us so we know what we need to work on. We'll come back and fix it."
Jaclyn Toohey led the Rebels offensively with 14 kills on the night, while junior Elena Garcia continued her double-figure performance tallying 12 kills and 15 digs on the night. Rachel Refenes notched 10 kills in the match.
Defensively Mary Nell Bennett led the way with 16 digs on the night to go with Garcia's 15. Jennifer McGowan turned in 11 digs on the night. Both Lucianna Lima and McGowan recorded 23 assists for the match.
Baylor drew first blood in the first game, taking a 2-0 lead, but Ole Miss fought back with a run to pull ahead 4-2 early. The Rebels held onto the lead despite a tough rally from the Bears, finally forcing the host team to take a timeout as Ole Miss began to pull away with a 13-10 lead. The Rebels continued to pull away out of the break, forcing another Baylor timeout with Ole Miss leading 22-15.
The Bears came out of the second timeout and pushed the Rebels, trying to cut back into the lead. The Rebels took a timeout as the Baylor attack cut the lead to 23-19. Ole Miss pulled back ahead, but called timeout at 29-28 after another Baylor run.
The Rebels held on out of the timeout, taking the first game 30-28.
Baylor jumped out early again in the second game, taking a 3-0 lead before Ole Miss could get on the board. The Rebels pulled within one at 8-9, but the Bears pulled out ahead again with a run forcing an Ole Miss timeout down 11-17.
The Rebels were unable to stop the Baylor run and again took a timeout trailing 13-21. Baylor would maintain control of the match despite a late run by Ole Miss. The Bears took the second game 30-22.
Ole Miss struck first in the third game, scoring two quick points off a Garcia kill, but Baylor responded taking the lead back 4-2. The Rebels tied it up at 7, but the Bears pushed back ahead forcing an Ole Miss timeout down 7-12.
Unable to stop Baylor from scoring, the Rebels were forced to take another timeout at 9-17. The Bears took control from there, storming out ahead even farther before taking the third game 30-18.
The two teams traded points in the early part of the fourth game, but Baylor took control with things tied at five and pushed out to the lead. Ole Miss fought back, but the Bears began to push away again, forcing the Rebels into a timeout down 14-19.
Ole Miss fought back to within three, trailing only 18-21, but the Bears once again answered the Rebel run with a run of its own. Ole Miss called its second timeout of the game down 18-23.
Baylor would go on to win the match by taking the fourth game 30-24. The Bears got big production from Tisha Schwartz who tallied 26 kills to lead all players, while Stella Odion and Des Guilliard-Young turned in 12 kills.
Ole Miss will return to action at the Chicago-Illinois tournament September 5-6, 2003. The Rebels will face Illinois-Chicago in the opening match at 7:30 p.m. on Friday.
