OXFORD, Miss. - The second day of Ole Miss' preseason football workouts served as a platform for the Rebel freshmen to impress.

Over the course of Tuesday evening's practice, Ole Miss head coach David Cutcliffe was pleased with the energy and fitness of his freshmen, particularly on the defensive side.

"I really liked our freshmen tonight," Cutcliffe said. "They knew what to do out there a little bit better. I thought they really looked athletic, and that's encouraging. They also look to be in fairly good shape.

"At one point, we had 11 freshmen - three redshirt and eight true freshmen - working out on defense, and I thought that was a pretty good looking defense."

The Rebels once again tried out the new Astroplay surface of Vaught-Hemingway Stadium and worked for two-and-a-half-hours in helmets, shorts and no pads. After two hours of positional and offensive/defensive group work, the team participated in some full-squad drills, followed by some kickoff exercises. The freshmen took some extra reps at the end.

"I thought our offensive execution wasn't quite as sharp today as it was yesterday," Cutcliffe said. "I want to see that pick up.

"Tomorrow, we'll put on shoulder pads and see a lot more about ourselves."

The Rebels continue preseason practice with another single workout Wednesday evening. Ole Miss will host Meet the Rebels Day on Aug. 16, as players and coaches greet fans and sign autographs in The Grove.
