Volleyball Reports To 2003 Preseason Camp

OXFORD, Miss. - Football is not the only sport holding preseason camp this week, as five returnees and seven newcomers of the Ole Miss volleyball team took to the courts at the Gillom Sports Center Thursday morning for their first preseason workout of the 2003 campaign.

"We are extremely excited with the level of athleticism in our gym with the start of preseason," head coach Joe Getzin said. "It is obvious that the returning kids worked extremely hard in the offseason, and it showed with how much they've improved. It was great to see their leadership skills in practice. They have made the newcomers feel welcome and helped them along as they try to learn our system."

The team went through orientation on Wednesday and took pictures before beginning practice Thursday. Getzin, who is in his second season with the Lady Rebels, had plenty to be excited about when he got his first look at the newcomers.

"We've added a level of athleticism that hasn't been seen here in awhile," Getzin said. "We've got a lot more size and physical ability on the court while also maintaining a high level of volleyball experience. We are looking forward to these young ladies helping us build on the success that we had last year."

Attendance nearly tripled last year in Getzin's first season, which included the largest crowd (1,378 vs. Mississippi State) ever to witness a volleyball match at Ole Miss. The Lady Rebels posted an 11-17 record in 2002 including season sweeps of arch-rival Mississippi State and Auburn.

The team will continue two-a-day practices through next week until school starts on Aug. 18th. The Lady Rebels open the season Aug. 29-30 at the Baylor Classic in Waco, Texas. They open up with Wyoming at 5 p.m. on the 29th.
