OXFORD, Miss. - The final score (3-0) of the Ole Miss volleyball match against Portland in the Magnolia Tournament didn't indicate how hard the Lady Rebels fought Friday night in a losing effort. The Lady Rebels (1-8) lost by scores of 30-28, 30-25, 30-27.

Ole Miss had game one in its hands. They led 25-20, but Portland used a 10-3 run to take the game 30-28. In game two, Ole Miss trailed most of the game. Down 24-18, the Lady Rebels won three consecutive points to get within three (24-21) before Portland called timeout. The Lady Rebels trailed 25-23, but never quite got over the hump, losing 30-25.

Game three started out close before Portland would take a 18-13 lead. Ole Miss battled back to tie it at 19 and then took the lead 20-19. The two teams would then go back and forth until Portland went ahead 27-26. Ole Miss used its last timeout, but the Pilots won three of the final four points to take the game 30-27 and improve to 6-3 overall and 1-1 in the tournament.

Sophomore middle blocker Rachel Refenes led the Lady Rebels with 13 kills on 19 attempts for a .579 attack. Junior outside hitter Megan McCune had a solid game hitting .375 with 7 kills on 14 attempts. Junior outside hitter Elena Garcia finished with 11 kills and six digs on the night.

Ole Miss won their first match of the tournament, a 3-0 win over Alcorn State earlier in the day.

The Lady Rebels will conclude the tournament against Arkansas-Little Rock Saturday at 2 p.m. Portland will meet Alcorn State in the first match at Noon.
