Ole Miss Volleyball Falls To Southern Miss Tuesday

The Ole Miss volleyball team could not overcome 12 service errors and 12 reception errors in falling to Southern Mississippi 3-0 on the road Tuesday night. With the loss, the Lady Rebels dropped to 1-10, while USM improved to 10-2 on the season.
Ole Miss jumped out to a 9-3 lead in game one, when Southern Miss called timeout. The Golden Eagles then went on an 8-1 run to go ahead 11-10. The game stayed close after that and was tied at 21. But, USM used a 9-3 run to close out the game 30-24. Ole Miss out hit Southern Miss .323 to .295 but three service errors and five reception errors were costly. Sophomore Rachel Refenes had five kills on seven attempts for a .714 attack to lead the Lady Rebels. The Golden Eagles were led by senior Nicki Tribble's four kills.
Game two stayed close and was tied at 21-21. That's when USM went on a 7-0 run to go up 28-21. Ole Miss could only get to within four (28-24) before the Golden Eagles won the next two points for the 30-24 win. The Lady Rebels hit just .114 in game two. They were led by Jaclyn Toohey's three kills on for attempts for a .750 hitting percentage. Tribble led the Golden Eagles with seven kills and hit .400.
Ole Miss led 20-14 in game three before seeing their lead erased with a 8-2 USM run, as the Golden Eagles tied it at 22. Southern Miss won eight of the final 12 points to take the game 30-26 and the match.
Refenes finished with 10 kills on 20 attempts for a .350 clip to lead the Lady Rebels. She also had five blocks. Junior Megan McCune also had 10 kills and hit .292. She added six digs and two service aces. After opening the match hitting .323, the Lady Rebels finished at .175.
Southern Miss was led by Tribble's 16 kills and .308 percentage. She also had four service aces. Bridget Files added 11 kills and eight digs.
The Lady Rebels return to action this weekend as they travel to Houston to take on the University of Houston and Rice. Friday, Ole Miss will face Houston at 7:30 p.m. and then take on Rice at 5 p.m. on Saturday.
