WACO, Texas - Ole Miss linebacker Jamil Northcutt of Tullahoma, Tenn., has been selected to the 2003 American Football Coaches Association Good Works Team.
Northcutt, a 6-2, 230-pound senior, is the fifth Ole Miss Rebel to be named to the AFCA Good Works team in the last seven years, joining linebacker Walker Jones (1997), running back Deuce McAllister (1999), quarterback Romaro Miller (2000), and quarterback Eli Manning (2002) on the prestigious team.
The Southeastern placed four schools with student-athletes on this year's team, while St. Thomas earned its record sixth-straight selection. Georgia leads all SEC schools with eight student-athletes chosen for the team, while Ole Miss and Tennessee have each had five student-athletes selected. Auburn earned its second selection this year. Leading the way for both teams is Nebraska. The Cornhuskers have had nine student-athletes chosen for the team, including one in each of the last three years. Averett, Carson-Newman, Chowan, La Salle, Texas A&M-Kingsville, Tusculum and Wartburg all earned Good Works honors for the first time.
Northcutt, who serves as a Mentor for Oxford High School Fellowship of Christian Athletes, is a motivational speaker for FCA. He helps out at the North Mississippi Regional Center and has played a key role in the Reading With The Rebels program at local city, county and private schools. Northcutt visits day care centers, playing with and reading to the children. He also participated in the "Rebels for Nix" drive, which helped raise money for former Southern Mississippi running back Derrick Nix's successful kidney transplant.
"Jamil has been a great representative of our University," said Ole Miss head coach David Cutcliffe. "He continues to make a difference in our community through the athletic department's CHAMPS Life Skills program, as do other members of our athletic teams. We are proud to once again have a member of our football squad on the AFCA Good Works Team."
The two 11-man teams, a Division I-A team and a combined team from Divisions I-AA, II, III and the NAIA, honor players for their dedication and commitment to community service. From 1992-1996, the Good Works Team was selected by the College Football Association. When the CFA disbanded in 1997, the AFCA began selecting the teams.
"It never ceases to amaze me to see the contributions student-athletes make to their communities," said AFCA Executive Director Grant Teaff. "Often times, these young men are better known for the good things they do on the field. The AFCA is proud to recognize these student-athletes for the good things they do in their communities."
Nominations were submitted to the AFCA by the college sports information departments. Nominees have to be actively involved and committed to working with a charitable organization, service group or involved in other community service activities.
Candidates have to display sincere concern and reliability, while also having made a favorable impression on the organizations with which they are involved. Athletic ability is not a criteria.
