Volleyball Drops 3-1 Match To Houston On The Road

HOUSTON - The Ole Miss volleyball team lost to the University of Houston 3-1 (30-27, 21-30, 30-20, 30-15) on the road Friday night at Hofheinz Pavilion. With the loss, the Lady Rebels dropped to 1-11, while the Cougars improved to 3-8.
For the second consecutive match, serving hurt the Lady Rebels, as they had 10 service errors and nine reception errors. The Lady Rebels also only had two service aces to Houston's nine.
In game one Ole Miss jumped out to a 10-3 lead, but Houston went on a 8-1 to tie the game at 11. The game stayed close the rest of the way. Houston led 22-20, when Ole Miss won four unanswered points to regain the lead at 24-22. The Lady Rebels led 25-23, but the Cougars won three straight points to go ahead 26-25. Ole Miss tied it up again and then a service error gave UH a 27-26 lead. Rachel Refenes' kill made it 27-27. The Cougars won the next two points to go up 29-27 when Ole Miss used its final timeout of the game. On game point, the Cougars aced the Lady Rebels to win 30-27. Ole Miss outhit Houston .226 to .138, but three service errors and five reception errors proved costly in the final margin.
The Lady Rebels and the Cougars battled back and forth in game two with Ole Miss holding a two-point lead (10-8). Ole Miss won seven of the next 11 points to go up 17-12, as Houston called timeout. Following the timeout, the Lady Rebels won the next two points to take a 19-12 lead, forcing UH to use its final timeout of the game. The Cougars would never get any closer as Ole Miss won the game 30-21.
Things didn't start off well for the Lady Rebels in game three as they fell behind early, 10-6. Houston increased its lead to 19-11, when Ole Miss used its last timeout. The Lady Rebels never got any closer as Houston won 30-20 to take a 2-1 lead in the match.
Game four started out like game three, with Ole Miss getting down 7-2, before calling timeout. Houston increased its lead to 15-6, forcing the Lady Rebels to use their final timeout of the game. Ole Miss never got any closer than nine as the Cougars went on to win the game 30-15 and the match 3-1.
Elena Garcia, playing for the first time since the Portland match, finished with a double-double of 10 kills and 17 digs to lead the Lady Rebels. Sophomore Refenes had 11 kills, five digs, four blocks, and hit .333.
Houston was led by Lauren Rhodes, who recorded a double-double of 14 kills and 24 digs. Cinthia Piva added 15 kills and nine digs.
Ole Miss will face Rice University Saturday at 5 p.m. at Autry Court to conclude their road trip.
