NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Freshman Kyle Ellis and junior David Shields fired sub-par rounds of 70 on the first day of action at the Mason Rudolph Championships to help push the Ole Miss men's golf team to tie for third.
The Rebels fired a first-round score of 290 for the position.
The tournament, which was originally scheduled for 54 holes, saw the first round canceled due to inclement weather.
Both Ellis and Shields sit tied for 10th in the overall standings heading into the final round of play. The tournament, which is being played at the par-71, 6-844-yard Golf Club of Tennessee, will conclude with a single round on Tuesday.
"I'm really excited for the way Kyle Ellis and David Shields stepped up to the plate and led this team today," said head coach Woody Cowart. "We are in a good position to separate ourselves on Tuesday, we just have to maintain our focus and intensity as a team and all play our best golf."
The three other players for the Rebels all finished the first round tied for 51st overall. Junior Jarrod Gardner, senior Pope Spruiell and freshman Chris Rogers all fired a score of 75 in first-round action.
UAB leads the tournament with a score of 273 after the first round, while South Carolina-Aiken sits in second with a score of 288.
