Ole Miss Takes Fifth At Mason Rudolph Championships

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Ole Miss's Jarrod Gardner fired a 1-under par score of 70 in the final round of action to help push his team to a fifth-place finish at the Mason Rudolph Championships on Tuesday, as the team fired a two-day score of 290-296-586.
Gardner, who finished in a tie for 12th overall in the final standings, carded a score of 75-70-145 at the two-day event. The tournament, which was played at the par-71, 6,844-yard Golf Club of Tennessee, was cut short after inclement weather caused the first round of play to be canceled.
"The golf course was difficult, but we had our chances and we didn't capitalize," said head coach Woody Cowart. "We struggled some on the back nine, but everyone did that today with a few exceptions.
"Jarrod Gardner played solid golf for us today," Cowart continued. "Kyle Ellis and David Shields shooting a 70 on the first day was huge for us. These guys are showing flashes of what they can do, we just have to put it together solidly for a whole tournament. Overall I am pleased because we are so young, but we had some great opportunities we have to capitalize on."
Kyle Ellis and David Shields, who both held the Rebels in the top five after the first day with sub-par rounds, tied for 26th in the final standings. Both players fired scores of 70-77-147 for the two rounds of action.
Pope Spruiell, the only senior competing at the event for the Rebels, finished the event tied for 33rd overall with a score of 75-74-149. Freshman Chris Rogers carded a 75-75-150 to round out the scoring for the Rebels. Rogers tied for 43rd overall.
The Rebels will return to the course on Sept. 29-30 at the Adams Cup of Newport at the University of Rhode Island.
