Volleyball Falls To Illinois-Chicago 3-0 At UIC Invitational

CHICAGO - The Ole Miss women's volleyball team lost their opening match of the UIC Invitational to host, Illinois-Chicago, 3-0 (30-17, 30-25, 30-24) Friday night to drop to 0-4 on the 2003 season.
Game one went back and forth and was tied at 11 when the Flames used a 12-2 run to build a 23-13 lead. They outscored the Lady Rebels 7-4 the rest of the way for the 30-17 score. Senior outside hitters Lindsey Filkins and Teah Shepperd led UIC with four kills a piece, while Ole Miss finished with just six kills for the game.
In game two the two teams battled with UIC taking a 13-10 lead. Ole Miss tied it up at 13, but then the Flames went ahead 19-16, before Ole Miss called timeout. The Flames held on to a four point lead and led 26-22 when Ole Miss called their final timeout of the game. The Lady Rebels pulled to within two 27-25, but UIC won the next five points to take a 2-0 lead in the match. Shepard led the Flames with nine kills. Also helping the cause for the Flames were Jordan Studzinski with six kills on a .500 clip and Megan Hoffman, who hit .417 with six kills. Freshman Jillian Ohrman led the Lady Rebels with four kills on six attempts for a .667 hitting percentage.
Once again the Flames gained the lead early in game three. They led 13-7 when Ole Miss used its first timeout. The Lady Rebels won six of the next seven points to pull within one (14-13). But, the Flames answered with a 10-1 run to go back up 24-14. They led by 10 (28-18), before the Lady Rebels would win five consecutive points to cut the lead in half. The Flames won the two of the next three points to finish off the Lady Rebels 30-24.
Junior Elena Garcia recorded her fourth double-double of the season with 10 kills and 10 digs to lead the Lady Rebels. Sophomore Rachel Refenes had nine kills and five blocks.
The Flames were led by Shepperd's 11 kills. Studzinski hit .500 with nine kills on 18 attempts, while Hoffman turned in a .438 clip with eight kills on 10 attempts. She also added 15 digs to UIC.
The Lady Rebels will conclude the tournament Saturday with a Noon match against Northwestern and then a 5 p.m. match versus Loyola-Chicago.
