  • Manning set new school career records in this afternoon's game for passing attempts, TDs responsible for, and total offense ... He now holds 30 Ole Miss records.
  • Manning broke John Fourcade's (1978-1981) career record for total offense on a 20-yard completion to Chris Collins in the second quarter ... Manning finished the day with 292 yards of total offense to give him 6,976 in his career. Fourcade recorded 6,724 yards of total offense in his career.
  • With a 12-yard TD pass to Kerry Johnson in the second quarter, Manning tied the Ole Miss career record for TDs responsible for at 56, which was set by his father, Archie Manning (1968-1970) ... He then took sole possession of first place for TDs responsible for at Ole Miss with a 17-yard TD pass to Taye Biddle with 2:05 left in the second quarter to give the Rebels a 17-14 lead ... Manning would throw two more TD passes on the afternoon and has 59 career TDs responsible for.
  • Manning became Ole Miss' all-time leader in passing attempts on an 11-yard completion to Kerry Johnson in the second quarter. The attempt was the 982nd of his career to surpass Kent Austin's (1981-1985) mark of 981. Manning finished the game at 1,003 career passing attempts.
  • Manning passed the 7,000 mark for career passing yards on the 40-yard TD pass to junior WR Bill Flowers in the third quarter to extend the Rebels' lead to 31-21 ... Manning finishes the afternoon at 7,086 career passing yards.
  • The 292-yard passing performance marked his 22nd career 200-yard passing game and his 16th career 250-yard passing game - both Ole Miss career marks.
  • Eli passed his father, Archie, for third place on the Ole Miss career list for total offensive plays. Eli now has 1,095 (rush or pass) career total offensive plays, while Archie totaled 1,043 during his career. The career record is held by Fourcade with 1,275 plays.
  • The interception by Memphis' Coot Terry with 3:16 left in the fourth quarter was Manning's first in 134 attempts dating back to last season ... The streak of 133 consecutive passes without an interception is the fourth longest in school history.

SERIES NOTES

  • This afternoon's meeting was the 53rd all-time between the two schools ... Ole Miss holds a 42-9-2 lead in the series.
  • The 44-34 win by Memphis snapped the Rebels' four-game win streak in the series. Prior to today, Memphis' last win in the series came in 1994, when the Tigers scored a touchdown with four seconds left to defeat the Rebels 17-16 in Oxford.
  • Ole Miss had won nine off the last 11 meetings entering today's contest.
  • Today's game was the first between the two teams in Memphis since 1999 when the Rebels won 3-0 in head coach David Cutcliffe's regular-season debut.
  • Ole Miss is now 22-7-2 against the Tigers in Memphis.

  • Today's loss snapped Ole Miss' nine-game win streak versus Conference USA opponents. Entering today's game, Memphis was also the last C-USA team to defeat the Rebels, winning 17-16 in Oxford back in 1994.
  • Ole Miss is now 121-47-2 (.718 winning pct.) all-time against schools that are currently members of C-USA ... Head coach David Cutcliffe is now 4-1 against C-USA teams at Ole Miss.
  • The Rebels have trailed at the half in both games this season ... Vanderbilt held a 7-6 lead at the break in last weekend's game, and Memphis scored on a 31-yard pass from Danny Wimprine to Maurice Avery with 0:09 seconds left in the half to take a 21-17 lead.

OFFENSIVE NOTES

  • Senior WR Chris Collins caught six passes to extend his streak to 24 consecutive games with at least one reception. It is the second longest known streak in Ole Miss history, behind Willie Green's (1986-1989) 37-game streak.
  • Collins now has 133 career receptions and is in sole possession of fourth place on the school's career list ... He entered the game tied with Floyd Franks (1968-1970) at 127 ... Collins is now nine receptions shy of the school's career mark of 142 set by Grant Heard (1996-2000).
  • With 97 yards receiving today, junior WR Bill Flowers became the 20th player in Ole Miss history to record 1,000 career receiving yards.
  • Junior FB Lorenzo Townsend scored his first career TD on a five-yard reception from Eli Manning in the third quarter to give the Rebels a 24-21 lead.
  • Redshirt freshman RB Jamal Pittman rushed for 18 yards on his first career carry in the fourth quarter.
  • Vashon Pearson's 18-yard run in the fourth quarter was a career long and is the longest by a Rebel this season.

DEFENSIVE NOTES

  • Memphis' 26-yard scoring drive on its opening possession, following an Ole Miss turnover, marked the first time the Rebels have allowed an opponent to score on its first drive since Georgia marched 52 yards on nine plays for a touchdown in last year's game in Athens.
  • Senior DE Josh Cooper sacked Tiger QB Danny Wimprine in the first quarter to extend the Rebels' streak to 18 consecutive games with at least one sack ... Ole Miss has also tallied at least one sack in 35 of its last 36 games.
  • DeAngelo Williams' 43-yard TD run in the second quarter broke a streak of 20 consecutive quarters by the Ole Miss defense without allowing a rushing TD.
  • The 506 yards of offense by Memphis was the most allowed by Ole Miss since Arkansas recorded 531 yards during the seven-overtime game on November 3, 2001 in Oxford.
  • Memphis' 355 yards passing is the sixth-highest total by an opponent against the Ole Miss, and the most since Tulane passed for 358 yards against the Rebels in a 31-24 loss on September 26, 1987.

SPECIAL TEAMS NOTES

  • Junior Cody Ridgeway hit a season-long 64-yard punt in the second quarter. He had a long of 50 in last weekend's game at Vanderbilt.
  • Junior PK Jonathan Nichols was 4-of-4 on PAT attempts to tie Bryan Owen's (1985-1988) Ole Miss career record for PATs made at 92 ... Nichols also ranks second in career PAT attempts at Ole Miss with 94, four shy of Owen's career mark of 98.
  • Nichols has now made 54 straight PAT attempts to Owen for the second-longest streak in school history ... Steve Lavinghouze (1973-1975) holds the Ole Miss record for consecutive PATs made at 59.
  • Nichols made FG attempts of 25 and 30 yards to extend his streak to eight consecutive FGs made.
  • With 10 points scored, Nichols moved into fifth place on the Ole Miss career list for points by a kicker with 161 ... Nichols also moved into sixth place on the school's overall career scoring list.

MEMPHIS POSTGAME NOTES

  • Tiger captains for today's game were quarterback Danny Wimprine, receiver Darren Garcia, linebacker Greg Harper and cat safety Derrick Ballard.
  • Today's Memphis vs Ole Miss game was carried by ESPN2. It marked the Tigers' first televised appearance since last year's Memphis vs Louisville game. That game was aired by ESPN2 on Thursday night, October 8th.
  • Last year's Memphis vs Ole Miss game was televised by Jefferson-Pilot from Vaught-Hemingway Stadium.
  • Senior middle linebacker Will Hyden started his first game as a Tiger today against Ole Miss. Hyden, who is a former walk-on for the Tigers, was given a scholarship prior to the start of the 2003 season. He played middle linebacker for the first time last week against Tennessee Tech. Hyden finished with four solo tackles and three assists and registered his first-career sack.
  • Cornerback Lee Hayes had his first fumble recovery as a Tiger when he picked up a Mike Espy fumble in Rebel territory. Cat safety Scott Vogel made the hit that caused the fumble. The play led to a Tiger touchdown.
  • The Tigers got on the scoreboard first when quarterback Danny Wimprine hit tailback DeAngelo Williams for 19 yards and a touchdown. It was Wimprine's 40th career touchdown pass and Williams third touchdown reception of the season. Wimprine later connected with wide out Maurice Avery for 31 yards and a score to up his career touchdown pass record to 41. Wimprine's 92-yard hook up with Tavarious Davis moved him to 42.
  • Sophomore tailback DeAngelo Williams 43-yard run for a touchdown in the second quarter was his longest run of the season. The Wynne, AR, native, who entered the game ranked 10th in the nation in points responsible for, scored twice in the first half of today's game. ESPN2 announcers Pam Ward and Chris Speilman referred to Williams as "T.D. Angelo" Williams. Williams scored on a 23-yard run in the fourth quarter and in doing so, went over the 100-yard mark in rushing for the first time this season. Williams has scored three touchdowns in each of the first two games this season.
  • Junior receiver Darron White caught at least one pass in 10-of-11 games played as a freshman and all 12 games of the 2002 season. With pass receptions in his first two contests this season, White now has a consecutive streak of 24 games with one or more pass receptions.
  • Sophomore receiver Maurice Avery caught the first touchdown of his career when he hauled in a 31-yard pass from Danny Wimprine with :09 seconds remaining in the first half. Avery, a former quarterback, ran for two touchdowns in last weekend's win over Tennessee Tech.
  • Entering today's game, Ole Miss had not given up a rushing touchdown in 19 quarters. DeAngelo Willliams had two rushing touchdowns against the Rebels today.
  • Today's attendance of 51,914 is the largest crowd in Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium since the 2000 Memphis vs Tennessee game when 63,121 fans attended.
  • Tight end John Doucette's four catches for 92 yards in today's game marks career highs for the sophomore from New Orleans, LA. Doucette caught two passes for 38 yards in the season-opening Tennessee Tech game.
  • The University of Memphis was one yard shy of setting the school record for passing yards in a game as quarterback Danny Wimprine and wide receiver Chris Kelley combined for 389 yards passing. Kelley hooked up with Wimprine on 34-yard throwback pass in the fourth quarter.
  • Quarterback Danny Wimprine set a school record with 376 yards of total offense in the victory. Wimprine threw for a career-high 355 yards and hauled in the third reception of his career for 34 yards. The quarterback lost 13 yards on two carries.
  • The victory over Ole Miss was the first in 13 tries for Memphis over an SEC school since the Tigers defeated Tennessee 21-17 in 1996.
  • The 92-yard touchdown reception by Tavarious Davis tied for the second-longest in school history. Davis had a career-high 113 yards receiving on three catches.
  • Linebacker Coot Terry and cat safety Derrick Ballard each picked off Ole Miss quarterback Eli Manning in the fourth quarter to preserve the victory for the Tigers. It was the second interception of Terry's career. His first came when he picked off a pass against Louisiana-Monroe as a redshirt freshman. Ballard's interception was the fifth of his career.
  • Running back DeAngelo Williams combined for 249 yards of total offense and three touchdowns. Williams had 135 yards rushing, 73 yards on four kick returns and 31 yards on four receptions.
  • The 506 yards of total offense for Memphis was the 10th most in school history.
