Sophomore middle blocker Rachel Refenes of the Ole Miss volleyball team was named to the UIC Invitational All-Tournament Team for her performance this past weekend in Chicago. The Lady Rebels will host Arkansas State Tuesday at 7 p.m. at the Gillom Sports Center in their home opener.
Refenes, a native of Menomonee Falls, Wisc., tallied 27 kills and 12 blocks in the Lady Rebels' three matches against Illinois-Chicago, Northwestern and Loyola-Chicago. She averaged 1.2 blocks per game and 2.7 kills for the weekend. Against Loyola-Chicago, Refenes led the Lady Rebels, hitting at a .308 clip with 12 kills on 26 attempts. She also had six total blocks and three digs.
"We are pleased that Rachel made the All-Tournament Team," head coach Joe Getzin said. "She stepped up in the last match against Loyola and gave us have a chance to come back and win the match."
On the season, Refenes leads the team and the SEC with an average of 1.52 blocks per game. She is also second on the team in kills with 57 and third in kills per game at 2.71. Refenes looks to continue her solid play as Ole Miss goes for its first win of the season Tuesday night against Arkansas State.
The first annual Gillom Grove will begin with Tuesday night's match. Tents will be set up in front of the Gillom Sports Center two hours prior to the start of every home match for fans to tailgate before coming inside to watch the Lady Rebels.
There are several promotions scheduled for the season, beginning with "Bryan Hot Dog Night" Tuesday. Fans will receive a free hot dog outside the Gillom Sports Center.
"We appreciate the fans turning out last year and helping us increase our attendance three-fold," Getzin said. "We would love to kick off our home season with a big crowd. Arkansas State has a good team, so it should be an exciting match for our home opener. We've planned some great promotions for the season and encourage fans to come out and help us beat Arkansas State and an enjoy a free hot dog."
Arkansas State comes into the match at 6-2. The Lady Indians are coming off a 2-2 performance at the Texas State Tournament in San Marcos, Texas. They are led by junior transfer Giedre Tarnauskaite, who leads the Lady Indians with 129 kills (4.03 per game) and 96 digs (3.00 per game).
Ole Miss has won five in a row in the series and six of the last seven. The last two matches have come down to the final game. The last time the two teams met in Oxford (Sept. 8, 2001) Ole Miss rallied for a 3-2 win. They did the same thing last year in Jonesboro.
