TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - Freshman guard Kate Mastin scored the final four points for Alabama as the host Crimson Tide came-from-behind to nip Ole Miss, 67-62, on Thursday night. Mastin scored on a turnaround jumper at the top of the key with just over a minute remaining in the game to give Alabama a three-point lead and then hit two free throws with 17 seconds left to seal the win.
"We know how hard it is to steal a win on the road," said Ole Miss head coach Carol Ross. "We had this one right there for the taking, but tightened up down the stretch. We have to play with more confidence when we get a lead."
Ole Miss jumped out to an early 8-4 lead behind six points from junior center Amber Watts. The Lady Rebels dominated the inside during the first period of play with Watts and junior center Amber Terrell combining for 18 points and eight rebounds.
Ole Miss forced 13 Crimson Tide turnovers in the first half of play, with freshman forward Armintie Price collected three steals and senior forward Tywanna Inmon and senior guard Genice Terry grabbing two a piece as the Lady Rebels took a 33-24 lead into the break.
The Lady Rebels pushed out to a 14-point lead at 42-28 just three minutes into the second period. The Crimson Tide defense turned up a notch and shut down the Ole Miss offense, holding Ole Miss to one field goal over the next eight minutes of action. By the time the Lady Rebels hit a field goal, they had allowed Alabama to real off 18 points, while just scoring two points of their own.
Terry hit her third three-point basket of the game to tie the score at 56, but Ole Miss could manage just six more points in the game, for the final score of 67-62.
Terry led all scorers in the game with 20 points. Inmon added 13 points for Ole Miss, while Watts and Terrell finished with 10 points each. Price led Ole Miss in rebounds with eight and Watts added seven. Carletta Brown led Ole Miss in assists with four.
Freshman forward Lauren Hill scored 14 points to lead the Crimson Tide. Junior Katie Sipe and freshman Navonda Moore each chipped in 11 for Alabama.
Ole Miss will return to action on Sunday, Jan. 18, when they play host to Mississippi State. The Lady Rebels and Bulldogs will match-up live on FoxSportsNet South. Game time is slated for 2 p.m., in Tad Smith Coliseum.
