Women's Tennis Kicks Off 2004 Season With A Bang

OXFORD, Miss. - The Ole Miss women's tennis team needed only 2 ? hours to kick off the 2004 season with a victory, as they defeated the Tennessee Tech Golden Eaglettes 7-0 Sunday afternoon at the Gillom Sports Center.
Ole Miss was near perfect in doubles play to start off the match, losing only two games in all three matches to take a 1-0 lead.
Senior Karem Harboe made it 2-0 Ole Miss, as she shutout her opponent, TTU's Alet Boonzaaier, 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2 singles. Junior transfer Chloe Carlotti showed the Ole Miss fans why she was a two-time All-American at Fresno State, cruising to a 6-1, 6-1 win over Marina Tasheva at the No. 1 spot.
Sabrina Peppl, one of four seniors on this year's squad, defeated the Golden Eaglette's Margot Carter 6-3, 6-3 at No. 3 singles to clinch the win.
"I was very impressed with the way we played today especially after only a week to practice," head coach Mark Beyers said. "We got off to a quick start in doubles and never gave them a chance to get in the match. We talked before the match about not only winning, but learning something and improving. I think we did those things today. We can build on this."
At No. 4 singles, senior Florencia Basile downed Melisa Cansado of Tennessee Tech 6-3, 6-2, and at the No. 5 spot, sophomore Virginia Tomatis defeated Maja Russinova of TTU 6-1, 7-5. Senior Audra Adams completed the sweep with a 6-3, 6-0 win over Golden Eaglette Alicja Kutyla.
The Lady Rebels return to the courts Saturday, Jan. 24 for a double-header beginning with Troy State at 10 a.m. and finishing up with Tennessee-Chattanooga at 4 p.m.
