MANHATTAN, Kan. - The 53rd-ranked Ole Miss women's tennis team won the doubles point against 33rd-ranked Kansas State and that proved to be key in a 4-3 win Friday night at the Ahearn Field House. With the win, the Lady Rebels improved to 4-0 on the season, while Kansas State, who reached the NCAA "Sweet Sixteen" in 2003, begins the season 0-1.
Ole Miss won at No. 1 and 3 doubles to take the first point in the match. Chloe Carlotti and Virginia Tomatis defeated Maria Rosenberg and Paulina Castillejos 8-5on court one, and then Karem Harboe and Florencia Basile handed Hayley McIver and Aveen Alkhatib 8-4 at No. 3 doubles.
The first four singles matches went three sets as the match lasted over five hours. Carlotti lost her first match since joining the team this spring, falling to Rosenberg 6-3, 1-6, 6-2 at No. 1 singles. Rosenberg, who evened the match with the win, knocked off a top 30 ranked opponent to capture the Kansas State Invitational last weekend.
At No. 2 singles, Harboe lost a first set tiebreaker 7-6(2) against K-State's Jessica Simosa, but won the second set 6-2. Simosa got the third set 6-1 to give the Wildcats a 2-1 lead.
Tomatis knotted the match at 2 by coming back to beat K-State's McIver 3-6, 6-0, 6-3 at No. 4 singles. Kansas State regained the lead when Castillejos rallied to defeat Lady Rebel Sabrina Peppl 5-7, 6-1, 6-2 at No. 3 singles.
Ole Miss got the better of KSU at the bottom two positions to improve to 4-0 against the Wildcats. Basile downed K-State's Judith Diaz 6-2, 6-1 at No. 5 singles, and freshman Emily Ladyman cruised to a 6-3, 6-1 win over Alkhatib at No. 6 singles to clinch the victory. Ladyman, a native of Memphis, Tenn., is 2-0 in two appearances at No. 6 singles this season.
"This was a great win for us on the road against a team that advanced to the NCAA final 16 a year ago," head coach Mark Beyers said. "The courts were a lot different than what we are used to, but the team responded. We took it to them at the bottom of the lineup."
The Lady Rebels will travel to Topeka, Kan., Sunday to face the University of Kansas at 12:30 p.m.
