Cutcliffe Named To AFCA Board Of Trustees

ORLANDO, Fla. - University of Mississippi's David Cutcliffe, University of Oregon's Mike Bellotti and Western Michigan University's Gary Darnell have been elected to the Board of Trustees of the American Football Coaches Association. The three were elected by members attending the 2004 AFCA Convention in Orlando, Fla.

They join a group of distinguished head coaches who guide the organization. The Board formulates policy and provides direction for the AFCA, which was founded in 1922 by Amos Alonzo Stagg, John Heisman and others. The AFCA has more than 10,000 members from all levels of the profession.

Returning members of the AFCA Board of Trustees include incoming president Ken Hatfield of Rice University; first vice-president Paul Pasqualoni of Syracuse University; second vice-president Scot Dapp of Moravian College and third vice-president Mel Tjeerdsma of Northwest Missouri State University.

Also serving on the Board in 2004: Ron Randleman, Sam Houston State University; Ken Sparks, Carson-Newman College; Larry Kehres, Mount Union College; Tyrone Willingham, University of Notre Dame; Tony Samuel, New Mexico State University; Rob Ash, Drake University; Chuck Amato, North Carolina State University; Lloyd Carr, University of Michigan; Bill Snyder, Kansas State University and Rob Ianello, University of Wisconsin, ex officio member and chairman of the Assistant Coaches Committee. AFCA Executive Director Grant Teaff serves as secretary-treasurer of the organization .

Cutcliffe completed his fifth year at Ole Miss in 2003 and has a career record of 40-22 in Oxford. The Rebels finished 10-3 in 2003, shared the Southeastern Conference Western Division title with BCS national champion LSU, and won the SBC Cotton Bowl with a 31-28 victory over Oklahoma State. He is the only coach in Ole Miss history to win seven or more games in each of his first five seasons at the school.

Bellotti completed his ninth season at Oregon in 2003, leading the Ducks to an 8-5 record and an appearance in the Sun Bowl. In 14 seasons at Oregon and Chico State Bellotti has a career record of 96-59-2, including a 75-34 mark at Oregon.

Darnell completed his seventh season at Western Michigan in 2003 and has a career record of 45-36 in Kalamazoo. He directed Western Michigan to consecutive MAC West Division titles and back-to-back appearances in the MAC Championship Game in 1999 and 2000.

The AFCA was founded in 1922 and currently has more than 10,000 members around the world, ranging from the high school level to the professional ranks. According to its constitution, the AFCA was formed, in part, to "maintain the highest possible standards in football and the coaching profession" and to "provide a forum for the discussion and study of all matters pertaining to football and coaching."
