OXFORD, Miss. - Ole Miss' Lindley Beckman scored in the 83rd minute, but the Rebel soccer team failed to pick up another goal in falling short to LSU 2-1 Friday, in front of 906 fans.
The Tigers (6-5, 1-2 SEC) controlled play in the first half and held a 2-0 advantage at the break thanks to Stacy Bishop. The sophomore forward connected on two goals in a near three-minute span.
At the 29:21 mark, Artie Brown sent a pass from the left corner and Bishop slid into the box for a quick header to the near post. Bishop struck again at 32:32 with an 18-yard blast to the upper left corner.
Down two goals, Ole Miss (5-6, 1-2 SEC) ignited its attack in the second stanza. Kristal Menard ripped off numerous near misses, and Tiger keeper Valerie Volger turned away four shots over the final 45 minutes.
The Rebels, who outshot LSU 10-8 in the second half, finally cut into the Tiger lead at the 82:43 mark, when Beckman weaved through traffic and launched a 20-yard rocket to the right corner of the net.
Despite a furious Ole Miss assault, LSU stifled the Rebels over the final seven minutes in registering its first SEC victory of the season.
"It's frustrating and disappointing," said Ole Miss head coach Steve Holeman. "As a staff, we're not sure how we can come out on a Friday night at home, in front of 900 fans, and play our worst half of the season. LSU outplayed us in the first half.
"We came alive in the second half, and obviously played much better. But it was too little too late, and LSU deserved the win."
The Rebels wrap up a four-game SEC homestand Sunday with Arkansas at 1 p.m. Ole Miss has won seven straight in the series, but the Lady Razorbacks enter the match with a 4-1-1 mark in their last six and fresh off a 2-1 overtime triumph at Mississippi State Friday.
