OXFORD, Miss. - Ole Miss posted three first-half goals, including a pair by Kelly Renie, and shut down Arkansas for a 3-0 soccer victory Sunday.
An All-SEC forward from Carmel, Ind., Renie had been held in check the past seven matches but broke out of her slump early against the Lady Razorbacks (6-5-1, 2-1-1 SEC). In the eighth minute, Karen Hall sent a cross into the box, and Renie headed the ball back over the goalkeeper to the far right corner of the net.
Renie struck again at the 33:35 mark with a 30-yard blast to the top of the net. Sammi Gould assisted on the goal, and would later set up another score. Passing from Gould and Brittney Potts allowed Leigh Barrow to streak behind the defense for a six-yard boot to the far corner in the 44th minute.
It marked Barrow's second goal of the year, while Renie ran her season total to five. Renie notched her second multiple-goal performance of 2004 and the eighth of her career.
Ole Miss (6-6, 2-2 SEC) outshot Arkansas 22-3 with a 7-0 edge on corner kicks. The Rebel defense limited the Lady `Backs to only two attempts on goal, and freshman keeper Ann Shelton registered her third complete shutout.
The Rebels snap a two-game skid and rebound from a 2-1 defeat to LSU Friday.
"LSU woke us up," said Ole Miss head coach Steve Holeman. "We know now that we can't take anyone lightly in the SEC and that showed in the first half today. We knew that we were the better team, but we also knew that we had to play our best to beat Arkansas."
The Rebels hit the road next with six of their final seven regular-season matches away from Oxford.
"You definitely want to go on the road with some confidence," Holeman said. "You want to go out scoring goals and playing great defense, and I think we did that today."
Ole Miss tours Alabama next weekend with the Crimson Tide Friday in Tuscaloosa and the 20th-ranked Auburn Tigers Sunday on the Plains. Friday's bout with Alabama is set for 6:30 p.m. CT and will televised on FSN South.
The Rebels' final home game of the campaign will be Oct. 22 against Kentucky.
