TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - Alabama's Emily Pitek ripped in a penalty kick in overtime for her first career goal in handing Ole Miss a tough 1-0 defeat Friday on the soccer field.
Less than three minutes into the first OT period, Pitek and Rebel defender Lyndsey Williams collided in the box chasing after the ball, and the Tide defender was awarded the PK, which she measured up to the left side.
In typical fashion for the heated division rivals, the match was physical and competitive. Ole Miss finished with a 22-11 edge on shots, and the Rebels had their opportunities throughout. Their best first-half scoring chance came 15 minutes in when a Kelly Renie header sailed just high of the net.
The Rebels nearly broke the deadlock twice during the final 20 minutes of regulation on hard shots in front by freshmen Christine Liberto and Amy Gill. Both attempts were turned away on diving stops by UA keeper Laura Lowman, who reco rded six saves on the night.
Alabama nearly put a goal on the board midway through the opening stanza, when a collision between a Rebel and a Tide player jolted a ball toward the net where Williams stepped in for the save. A sophomore from Germantown, Tenn., Williams made several key defensive plays before the unfortunate overtime call.
"You hate to lose a match like that on a penalty kick," said Ole Miss head coach Steve Holeman. "We played well enough to win. We did a good job of matching them physically and creating opportunities. We always know it's going to be a great match with Alabama."
The Rebels (6-7, 2-3 SEC) continue their tour of the state Sunday with No. 23 Auburn on the Plains. Game time is set for 2 p.m. CT.
