Soccer Picks Up First Road Win of the Season Against Louisiana

LAFAYETTE, La. – Ole Miss soccer scored twice in a span of 56 seconds during the first half to hold off Louisiana for a 2-1 road victory Sunday afternoon at the Home Bank Soccer & Track Complex.
Isabella Pontieri and Paxton Bock found the back of the net for the first time as Rebels, helping Ole Miss improve to 2-0-0 under first-year head coach Todd Shulenberger. The win marked the Rebels' first victory at Home Bank Soccer & Track Complex.
Louisiana (1-1-0) produced the first two opportunities of the afternoon, sending shots wide in the second and seventh minutes. Ole Miss responded through Pontieri, whose first attempt was blocked in the eighth minute.
Pontieri broke through at the 10:09 mark, converting a pass from Audrey Shackelford to give the Rebels an early 1-0 advantage. It marked Pontieri's first Ole Miss goal and Shackelford's first assist as a Rebel.
Ole Miss doubled its lead 56 seconds later after Maizy Kluksdal set up Bock in the 12th minute, with the defender recording her first goal as a Rebel to go up 2-0.
The Rebels continued to create opportunities throughout the opening half. Katie Ramsden sent an attempt wide in the 14th minute before Isabelle Wright forced Louisiana's goalkeeper into a save in the 32nd minute.
Ole Miss generated two additional chances shortly before halftime but to no avail. The Rebels entered halftime with a 2-0 advantage after putting four of their seven first-half shots on goal along with four corner kicks.
Pontieri nearly added her second goal in the 50th minute, but Louisiana's keeper made the save. Louisiana cut the deficit to one at the 54:11 mark when Miku Kurihara converted an assist from Addison Soehn.
The Ragin' Cajuns threatened again in the 63rd minute, but Taylor Prigge denied Kurihara to maintain the Ole Miss lead. Louisiana registered two attempts during the final 11 minutes, sending both wide as the Rebels secured their first road victory of the season.
Louisiana finished with a 9-8 advantage in total shots, while Ole Miss placed five attempts on goal compared with two for the Ragin' Cajuns. The Rebels earned all seven corner kicks in the match and held 54% of the possession.
Prigge played all 90 minutes in goal, recording one save and earning her second victory of the season.
Ole Miss returns to action Thursday, continuing its road trip against the College of Charleston in Charleston, South Carolina. Kickoff is set for 8 p.m. CT on FLOCOLLEGE.
