AUBURN, Ala. - For the second straight match, overtime was unkind to the Ole Miss soccer team, as No. 23 Auburn squeaked past the Rebels Sunday 2-1 on a Sara Power goal five minutes into the extra frame.
The opening half was in favor of the Tigers (10-2-1, 5-0-1 SEC), who held a 1-0 advantage at the break on a three-yard score by Christie Cigno at the 23:30 mark. Rebel goalkeeper Ann Shelton rejected a Sarah Steinmann attempt, but Cigno took the rebound and buried it in the back of the net.
Down 1-0, Ole Miss (6-8, 2-4 SEC) turned up its attack in the second half, and evened the score at a goal apiece in the 57th minute. AU keeper Megan Rivera came out to carouse a shot, and Rebel Karen Hall picked up the ball and punched it in from a yard out (4).
With the match still knotted at the end of regulation, Ole Miss opened OT with a pair of shots that sailed wide. Auburn got an opportunity at the 94:48 mark and took advantage. Steinmann set up Power, who drove it home from five yards away.
"We played with a lot of heart and emotion today," said Ole Miss head coach Steve Holeman. "Down by a goal, this team came out and really responded in the second half. After a disappointing loss on Friday, it's disheartening to play as hard and as well as we did today and come up short."
The Tigers finished with a slim 13-11 edge on shots, and Shelton notched seven saves in goal for the Rebels, who were upended at Alabama Friday 1-0 on a penalty kick goal three minutes into overtime.
Ole Miss returns to the road next weekend for South Carolina Friday and No. 11 Florida Sunday.
