LOS ANGELES - Junior Virginia Tomatis and freshman Nika Koukhartchouk of the Ole Miss women's tennis team advanced to the second round of prequalifying at the ITA Riviera All-American Championships Saturday.
Tomatis, competing in her first collegiate tournament of the fall, defeated Caria Mancinas of TCU, 6-4, 6-1. She will meet Audra Cohen of Northwestern in the second round on Sunday.
Koukhartchouk, who reached the finals of the main draw at the Ole Miss Fall Classic last weekend, continued her outstanding play, downing Lina Willi of Jacksonville, 6-1, 6-1. For the second time in a week, Koukhartchouk will face Maria Rosenberg of Kansas State. Koukhartchouk defeated Rosenberg, ranked No. 105 in the nation, 7-5, 7-5, in the second round of the Ole Miss tournament.
Both players will have two matches Sunday. Should they win both matches, they will then have to win on Monday to advance to the qualifying tournament, which takes place Tuesday-Wednesday.
The prequalifying is being hosted by UCLA. The tournament moves to the Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades Tuesday.
The Riviera/ITA Women's All-American Championships is the largest collegiate tournament of the season. Over 60 schools from across the country will be sending players to compete during the eight-day tournament, which concludes with the main draw finals next Sunday.
