Lady Rebel Netters Advance At ITA South Region

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - Ole Miss women's tennis senior Chloe Carlotti advanced to the third round of the "A" Draw at the Wilson/ITA South Region Championships Friday at the UA Varsity Courts. Freshman Sarah Sabin reached the third round of the "B" Draw, and Ole Miss also had three doubles teams advance.

Carlotti, ranked No. 43 in the nation and seeded No. 4, had a first-round bye and then downed Miranda Foley of Florida State, 6-1, 6-4. She will face the No. 10 seed, Natalie Frazier of Georgia, in the third round, Saturday. A two-time All-American, Carlotti is now 6-1 on the season.

Sophomore Ilona Somers defeated Isabel Rosenbrock of Auburn, 7-5, 6-0, in the first round before falling to Florida newcomer Whitney Benik, 6-2, 7-5. Freshman Mimi Renaudin came back to beat Dijana Stanic of South Alabama, 1-6, 6-1, 6-2. In the second round, Renaudin dropped a 6-2, 6-0 decision to the nation's No. 2 ranked player and the tournament's top seed, Megan Bradley of Miami.

Freshman Nika Koukhartchouk beat USA's Andrea Kurekova, 6-1, 7-6(3) in her first-round match. In her second round match against Alabama's Melissa Day, Koukhartchouk won the first set 6-2. Day came back to take the second 6-4. The two battled to a third-set tiebreaker, which Day won 7-6(4).

In the "B" Draw, Sarah Sabin reached the third round with a straight-set (6-1, 6-3) win over Southern Mississippi's Nikka Narra, after a first-round bye. Sabin will face the No. 1 seed in the "B" Draw, Ana Rupic of South Alabama.

Ole Miss had two doubles teams in the "A" Draw advance and one in the "B" Draw. Carlotti and Virginia Tomatis, ranked No. 15 in the nation and seeded No. 3, defeated Georgia Tech's Anson and Potapova, 8-5. The All-SEC duo will meet Alabama's Day and Mari Muller in the second round.

Somers and Renaudin, seeded No. 6 in the tournament, edged Seenauth and Applebaum of Miami, 9-7, and will face Florida's team of Suvak and Liles.

In the "B" Draw doubles, Sabin and Claire Conerly dominated Griffith and Sandquist of Belmont, 8-0.

The ITA South Regional is one of 17 Division I ITA Regional Championships being held across the country during the final two weeks in October. More than 7,000 athletes and 600 schools participate annually in ITA Regional and National Intercollegiate Championships.

The singles finalists and doubles champion from the prestigious event will be rewarded with invitations to the ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships at the University of Michigan, to be held November 4-7. The Indoor Championships are the second of three national championship events held during the season.
