PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. - Ole Miss women's tennis senior Chloe Carlotti advanced to the final round of qualifying at the Riviera All-American Championships Tuesday at the Riviera Country Club.
Carlotti, a two-time All-American, defeated 80th-ranked Lauren Perl of San Diego, 7-5, 6-3 in the first round. In the second round, Carlotti, ranked No. 43 in the nation, won a grueling three-set match against Tulane's Maria Ivanov, ranked No. 53. The two battled to a first set tiebreaker with Carlotti winning 15-13. Ivanov blanked Carlotti 6-0 in the second set, but Carlotti rebounded to claim the third set 6-3 to advance to the final round, where she will face Baylor's Carolin Walter.
In just her second match of the year, sophomore Ilona Somers won her first round, beating 69th-ranked Barbara Orlay of North Carolina State, 4-6, 6-2, 6-4. Somers, ranked No. 81 in the nation, then lost to 41st-ranked Maja Kovacek of New Mexico, 6-3, 6-3.
If Carlotti wins her singles match Wednesday, she would advance to the main draw, which begins Thursday. All told, 22 of the top 25 players in the preseason ITA singles rankings are competing in this year's main draw in singles.
Carlotti and junior Virginia Tomatis defeated Jenny Trettin and Barbara Kourim of Denver in the first round of qualifying doubles, 8-5. The Reb duo will face Maria and Darya Ivanov in the second round Wednesday. Carlotti and Tomatis will need to win twice Wednesday to reach the main draw.
