OXFORD, Miss. - The Ole Miss rifle team will close out the fall portion of its 2004-05 slate Saturday when it travels to Nebraska for a Great America Rifle Conference showdown against the Huskers. The competition will begin at 8 a.m.
The Ole Miss (3-2 overall in dual matches) and Nebraska (4-1 overall) rifle programs have drawn several similarities leading up to Saturday's tilt. The Rebels are in their ninth season of varsity competition and joined the GARC in 2001-02.
The Huskers are in their seventh year as an intercollegiate sport and first season as a member of the league. Nebraska is coached by Launi Meili, who captured a gold medal in three-position smallbore at the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona, Spain.
"Nebraska has quality shooters and a great coach," said Valerie Boothe, who has been the only rifle coach in Ole Miss history. "The Huskers have quickly become one of the nation's top programs and we will have to be ready this weekend. Our league has definitely gotten stronger over the past year and the addition of Nebraska has been one of the reasons why.
"We had a solid performance last weekend at Xavier and West Virginia. We are flying to Nebraska tomorrow (Friday) morning and need to our fall season on a positive note."
Junior Megan Sandage registered an aggregate total of 1152, while sophomore Jennifer Lorenzen turned in an 1148 last Saturday as Ole Miss edged West Virginia, 4575-4574.
