OXFORD, Miss. - Junior center Amber Terrell scored 10 points, though none of the 10 were more important than her basket with three seconds left to lift Ole Miss (13-8, 4-3 SEC) to a 90-88 double overtime win over Kentucky (9-11, 1-6 SEC).
Coming off a timeout with 17 seconds remaining on the clock, Ole Miss worked the ball around the perimeter, finally finding Terrell on the left block. Junior guard Carletta Brown passed the ball in to Terrell who spun into the lane and hit the short jumper with two seconds left to give the Lady Rebels the win.
"Coach (Carol) Ross said it wasn't a pressure shot, but I was feeling the pressure and didn't want to go to a third overtime period," said Terrell. "I told myself it was going in, and it did." Ole Miss forced the game to overtime as Brown pulled up and hit her only three-point basket at the end of regulation to tie the game at 68.
"I didn't even know the shot had gone in until I saw my teammates jumping up and down," Brown said. "I just knew I had to put the shot up because I heard Amber Watts yelling to shoot it. I just threw it up and it went in."
Four Lady Rebels posted double digits in scoring led by senior guard Genice Terry and freshman forward Armintie Price who both scored 19 points each. Watts added 14 points to go along with Terrell's 10 points. Price posted her 10th double double of the season, adding 11 rebounds.
"We call this group the 'cardiac kids'," said Ross. "They find a way to win and that's a sign of greatness. They fight to the finish. This is a scrappy bunch of fighters.
"Amber Terrell stepped up and made a huge block for us to send us into the second
overtime," Ross said. "We used her by design (in that final play). We felt we had the 'x-factor' and knew they didn't have an answer for her."
The second overtime period featured a contest of wills as the two teams battled back and forth, trading the lead eight times. Kentucky tied the game at 88 when Sara Potts hit one of two free throws with 23 seconds left in the game. The Lady Rebels notched the win off Terrell's game-winning bucket.
Kentucky pulled ahead of Ole Miss early in the first overtime period, extending its lead out to three twice before the Lady Rebels would rally. Ole Miss tied the game on a three-point play from Price with a lay-up and a free throw off a foul by Kentucky's Keiko Tate.
The Wildcats took the lead again off a basket by Potts, but Terrell returned the favor on a basket with 29 seconds left. Kentucky brought the ball down the court, but Terrell came up with a block to send the game into the second overtime period.
Potts and SeSe Helm led the Wildcats on the offensive side of the ball. Potts paced all scorers with 30 points, while Helm added 24 points of her own. Racquel Ellis notched 10 points and led Kentucky with seven rebounds.
Ole Miss returns to action against the South Carolina Gamecocks on Thursday, Feb. 5. Game time is set for 6 p.m. (CST), at the Carolina Center.
