Rebels Finish Seventh In NCAA Rifle Sectionals

MURRAY, Ky. - The Ole Miss rifle team fired an overall score of 6,056 to place seventh in the 10-team NCAA Sectionals. Competing at the Pat Spurgin Rifle Range over the weekend, the Rebels turned in a third-place effort in air rifle (1,534), while posting a seventh-place finish in smallbore (4,522).
Ole Miss now waits until Feb. 24 to see if its air rifle team will receive a bid to the NCAA Championships. Murray State will host the 25th-annual event, which features the nation's top eight teams in both air rifle and smallbore, March 11-13.
"This was our best-ever showing at an NCAA qualifier," Ole Miss head coach Valerie Boothe said. "We put together another solid effort in air rifle. I thought every one of our shooters could have done better on one of their targets, but we still finished third. I am pleased with our production in air rifle, but our smallbore scores are really hurting us right now. We will continue to work hard and will continue to get better in that area."
The host Racers won the sectional with an overall score of 6,156. Tennessee Tech placed second (6,151), while Kentucky-blue finished third (6,143), Jacksonville State fourth (6,122), Memphis fifth (6,105) and Kentucky-white sixth (6,104). The Rebels count of 6,056 finished ahead of eighth-place UT-Martin (6,017), ninth-place Austin Peay (1,450) and 10th-place UAB (1,306).
Freshman Jennifer Lorenzen led the Rebels with a total score of 1,544. For the second straight week, she registered a career best of 1,156 in smallbore, while also posting an all-time high of 388 in air rifle.
Freshman Mara Polonsky was second for Ole Miss with scores of 1,133 and 383 for a total of 1,516, while sophomore Megan Sandage added scores of 1,113 and 385 for a total of 1,498. Sophomore Laura Gavin shot a 1,120 in smallbore, while sophomore Samantha Leach fired a 378 air rifle.
Ole Miss is idle until it competes in the GARC Championships Feb. 27-29.
