MARTIN, Tenn. -- The Ole Miss rifle team kicked off its 2004 spring campaign Friday afternoon with a second-place finish in the four-team Tennessee-Martin Invitational. The top-finishing Racers turned in scores of 4,636 in smallbore and 1,533 in rifle. Ole Miss, meanwhile, collected scores of 4,504 and 1,511, while the Tigers posted scores 4,413 and 1,500 and the Governors - competing only in air rifle - recorded a 1,463.
"I thought we had some good individual efforts, but I was hoping for a better team score," Ole Miss head coach Valerie Boothe said. "Murray State really ran away with it in the end. They are a good team, but I thought we could've made the gap a little closer by being more competitive."
Freshman Jennifer Lorenzen led the Rebels in smallbore with a score of 1,149, which was good for seventh place in the competition. Freshman Mara Polonsky added a count of 1,133, while sophomore Laura Gavin shot a 1,122, sophomore Megan Sandage fired a 1,118 and sophomore Samantha Leach posted a 1,115.
