OXFORD, Miss. - The Ole Miss women's volleyball team prepares to open its spring season on Saturday, traveling to the University of Alabama to take on the Crimson Tide in the first of four weekends of competition.
The spring schedule features dates all across the Southeast and Midwest including stops in Memphis, and Austin, Texas.
"We're very excited about the competition we will face this spring," said Ole Miss head coach Joe Getzin. "Spring tournament give our returning players an opportunity to work in the off-season and hone their chemistry and skills as a unit. We have some great competition to work against this spring.
"We'll be working a couple of new athletes into the mix with the addition of Nikki Hill and Ashleigh Shear," Getzin said. "Both players come to us with a great desire to win and a competitive drive. This will provide a great opportunity to work them into our system before our fall season gets here."
Following this weekend's match up with the Crimson Tide, the Lady Rebels will take to the road for a tournament in Memphis on March 20. The tournament field includes: Memphis, St. Louis University and Birmingham Southern.
Ole Miss will return to the road the following weekend, traveling to Southeast Missouri State on March 27. The Lady Rebels will face a tournament field including St. Louis, Southern Indiana and Southeast Missouri State.
The final weekend of competition will have the Lady Rebels traveling to the Lonestar State to participate in a tournament at the University of Texas in Austin. The Lady Rebels will be a part of a strong field that includes Texas, Texas A&M, Purdue and Georgia.
Ole Miss is coming off a 2003 season that saw the Rebels post season sweeps over conference rivals Mississippi State and Auburn, along with an upset victory over Louisiana State University as the Rebels claimed five Southeastern Conference wins, the most SEC wins by an Ole Miss team since 1997.
