No. 18 Ole Miss Wins Series Opener Over South Alabama

MOBILE, Ala. - Sophomore first baseman Stephen Head went 3-for-5 with three doubles and four RBIs as No. 18 (Baseball America) Ole Miss defeated South Alabama 7-3 Friday evening, in front of 2,136 at Stanky Field in the opening game of a three-game weekend series.
Head gave the Rebels (4-0) a 2-0 lead with a two-out double to score Matt Tolbert in the fourth inning. He then highlighted a three-run sixth with a two-run double and added another RBI double in the seventh to make it 6-0.
Sophomore left-hander Brae Wright (2-0) worked a career-long seven innings to earn the win. He allowed three unearned runs on eight hits and no walks, while striking out five.
Freshman left fielder Alex Presley went 1-for-3 and hit his first career home run with a lead-off shot in the third that gave Ole Miss a 1-0 lead.
Junior right-hander Jeramy Simmons (0-1) suffered the loss. He was charged with five runs, three earned, on six hits and two walks, and struck out seven in six innings.
Ole Miss out-hit South Alabama (1-4) 10-9 on the evening.
Third baseman Brad Gordon went 2-for-4 with two RBIs for the Jaguars.
Ole Miss will look to secure the series win when the two teams meet in game two of the series Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. Sunday's series finale is scheduled for 2 p.m.
