FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - Ole Miss junior Antwon Hicks earned his first national title on Friday, by winning the 60-meter hurdles at the 2004 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships. Hicks, a native of Hot Springs, Ark., collected his third All-America honor of his career with Friday's victory.
"I ran my race and got the results I wanted," said Hicks. "I felt good all the way through and I did not touch any of the hurdles. I am really excited about winning the national title and I just want to keep working hard and continue to improve."
"Obviously, we are extremely proud of Antwon," said Ole Miss head coach Joe Walker. "Athletes of his caliber do not come along often. But what separates Antwon from the rest is his work ethic. He works hard every day and that makes his national title that much sweeter."
Hicks's winning time of 7.61 is the fastest time in the nation this season, eclipsing his previous mark of 7.66. His national title time is a personal best a new Ole Miss record in the 60-meter hurdles.
Hicks clocked in at 7.67 in his preliminary race to advance to the evening final. His time of 7.67 was the fastest preliminary time of the day. Jermaine Cooper of Texas edged Josh Walker of Florida for second place. Cooper and Walker both clocked in at 7.67 in the final with Cooper taking home the runner-up position in a photo finish.
The Rebels are tied for seventh place in the team standings after Hicks' win with 10 points.
