Ole Miss Holds On To Edge Southern Miss 4-3

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Rebels took advantage of early errors and forced a pitching change in the first inning as Ole Miss (7-16, 2-1 SEC) built an early lead on the way to a 4-3 win over Southern Miss (11-14) on Tuesday in the first game of a doubleheader.

Mary Jane Callahan (6-7) picked up her fifth straight win as a starter as she pitched 6.0 innings, striking out eight batters and walking two. She gave up three runs, all of them earned. Dana Brill picked up her first save of the season, working 1.0 inning in relief, striking out two batters and allowing one run.

Andrea Brahs led the Rebels at the plate as she went 2-for-3 with two RBI and scoring a run. Britte Hardy was 2-for-4 at the plate as she scored two runs.

The Rebels got on the board quickly in the first inning and forcing a pitching change with one out. Britte Hardy led off the inning with a single before Brooke Turner reached on a walk. DeDe Justice advanced both runners with a fly ball to left field. Hardy then scored the first run of the inning on a passed ball to Andrea Brahs. Brahs then singled to left field to score Turner and force the pitching change.

Mandy Ott reached on a fielding error by the pitcher while Brahs advanced to second. Mary Jane Callahan then loaded the bases when she reached on a catcher's interference. Rebecca McIntire then walked to score Brahs. Brittany Warner hit the ball down the first base line, reaching on a fielder's choice as the Golden Eagles went home to get Ott out. Stacy McCommon then flied out to right field, ending the inning with the Rebels up 3-0.

Ole Miss added a run in the fifth when Hardy scored off a Brahs single to left field. Hardy slapped a ball to center field to lead off the inning with a single. She advanced to second on a sac bunt from Turner. Justice reached safely when the shortstop muffed a line drive. Brahs then popped her single to left to score Hardy, but Justice was called out at third on the advance. Ott then flied out to right field, ending the inning.

Southern Miss struck back in the sixth with a home run from Ashley Davis. With two outs and Auriel Jenkins on first, Davis took the pitch on the 1-1 count over the left field wall to pull the Golden Eagles within two at 4-2. Sue Logan grounded out to short to end the inning.

The Golden Eagles came back at the Rebels in the seventh cutting into the lead with a run, but the Rebels' Dana Brill would fight off the charge to seal the win. Charity Butler singled to lead off the inning. Brill entered the game for Callahan before the next at bat. Butler was out at second in the next at bat as Heather Bell reached on a fielder's choice. Brill struck out Ashley Brennan in the next at bat for the second out of the inning. Jessica Huerta singled to left, advancing Bell to second. Diane Hammes then recorded her fourth hit of the night with a single down the left field line to score Bell and pull the Eagles within one. Brill would strike out Sarah Boyd to end the game and earn her first save of the season.

The Golden Eagles out hit the Rebels nine to eight, but the Rebels took advantage of two Southern Miss errors to build the lead for the win.
