OXFORD, Miss. - Big plays on both offense and defense highlighted a 70-minute situational scrimmage here Friday afternoon as Coach David Cutcliffe's Ole Miss Rebels continued spring football workouts inside Vaught-Hemingway Stadium.
"We had some real positive things happen during the scrimmage and I thought our team speed on defense was evident," Cutcliffe said. "I was proud of what they got done in the red zone. We have plenty to work on and must become a lot more consistent on offense."
Cutcliffe pointed out the play of running backs Vashon Pearson and Alan Abrams. Pearson had touchdown runs of one and four yards and Abrams scored from the two. "Vashon and Alan showed some spark and that was positive," he said.
Abrams rushed for 58 yards on 14 carries with a long run of 31 yards, while Pearson had 47 yards on 10 carries, including a long rush of 19 yards. Jonathan Nichols also had one field goal of 30 yards and Ian Turner connected from 22.
The biggest highlight on defense came when Nate Banks picked off an Ethan Flatt pass, returning it 42 yards for a touchdown.
Cutcliffe said his staff would have to look at the scrimmage tape before reaching any kind of grade assessment.
Friday's practice was the fifth of the spring. The next practice for the Rebels will be next Tuesday. Ole Miss will conclude spring drills Saturday, April 17 with the playing of the annual Red-Blue Game.
