CLEARWATER, Fla. - The Rebels only managed three hits, but it was enough to get the job done, as Ole Miss notched two runs on three hits to slip past the University of Illinois-Chicago 2-0 on Saturday in the final round of pool play at the Speedline Invitational.
The Rebels secured a third place finish in pool play with the win and will face the winner of Rutgers and Temple on Sunday at 9 a.m. in tournament play.
Ole Miss scored its first run in the fifth inning. Desiree Layman reached on a walk after Aunnie Brahs popped out to lead off the innings. Brittany Warner reached on an error by the second baseman as Layman made it safely to second on the error. Vanessa Gibbs came in to pinch run for Layman. With runners at first and second, Mary Jane Callahan singled through the left side, driving in Gibbs and advancing Warner to second as the Rebels took a 1-0 lead. Stacy McCommon struck out in the next at bat and the Flames caught Warner stealing at third to end the inning.
Illinois-Chicago threatened in the top of the sixth inning, giving the Rebels a scare. Michelle Miller reached on a fielding error by Callahan to lead off the innings for the Flames. Sara Hernandez then advanced Miller to second with a sacrifice bunt. Amanda Rivera then drove a ball deep into right field, but McCommon raced to the fence where she jumped and made the catch, flipping over the fence. She held onto the ball for the out forcing Miller, who had scored on the play, back to third base on a catch-and-carry ruling. Because McCommon had hit out of bounds after making the catch, the play was ruled dead and Miller was only allowed to advance one base on the play. The Rebels ended the threat in the next at bat as Alycia Creese flied out to left field.
Ole Miss added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth. With two outs on the board, DeDe Justice went to work with a single to left field. The designated player then stole second. Mandy Ott then singled to center field, scoring Justice to give the Rebels a 2-0 lead. Ott advanced to second on the throw home from centerfield. Brahs then flied out to left field, ending the inning.
The Flames would not manage a score in the final frame, giving the Rebels the win. Callahan (3-7) earned her second straight win of the tournament as she pitched a complete game, striking out five batters and walking three. Callahan's ERA improved to 1.33 with the appearance.
