No. 12 Ole Miss Sweeps Weekend Series From Eastern Illinois

OXFORD, Miss. - No. 12 Ole Miss (Baseball America) pounded out a season-high 19 hits in an 18-10 win over Eastern Illinois Sunday afternoon, in front of 1,819 at Oxford-University Stadium/Swayze Field to sweep the weekend's three-game series.

With the win, the Rebels remain unbeaten at 11-0, extending their school-record win streak to start a season. The Panthers fall to 1-5 with the loss.

Sophomore 1B Brian Pettway went 5-for-5 with two RBIs and sophomore Stephen Head went 1-for-3 with four RBIs, including hitting his seventh home run of the season. Head hit a two-run blast in the second to make it 9-0 as the Rebels built a 12-1 lead after two innings.

After Eastern Illinois scratched out a run in the top of the first, Ole Miss sent 11 batters to the plate in the bottom half to the inning to score seven runs and take a 7-1 lead. The Rebels sent nine batters to plate in the second inning to score five runs, highlighted by Head's two-run blast.

Ole Miss scored two more runs in the third to lead 14-1.

Eastern Illinois would score two in the fourth and three in both the fifth and sixth innings, while the Rebels answered with two runs in the fourth and two in the sixth to lead 18-9.

Head (1-0) worked four innings in his first start of the season and was designated the pitcher of record. He allowed three runs on eight hits and walked none, while striking out five.

Freshman RHP Chris Vaculik (0-1) was chased after one inning in his first collegiate appearance. He was tagged for seven runs, five earned, on five hits and three walks.

Charlie Babineaux also went 3-for-4 with three RBIs and Seth Smith was 3-for-4 with two RBIs for the Rebels.

Ryan Campbell went 4-for-5 for Eastern Illinois.

Ole Miss will continue its nine-game home stand Wednesday evening when the Rebels host Arkansas State at 6:30 p.m., at Oxford-University Stadium/Swayze Field.
